Shuffling the Deck
Close-up magic was trendy now. Boutiques cleared out their healing crystals and astrology charts and started stocking trick card decks and two-headed coins. They sold little boxes with mirror backs and colorful handkerchiefs that were sewn together into a long string. Folks forgot about their jade face rollers and matching vagina eggs. Their mushroom tea gathered dust in the back of the cupboard. They lost the number of their local tarot reader and started watching YouTube videos on how to link together two solid silver rings. My sister stopped complaining about her chakra alignment and started pulling quarters from behind my ears. The woman in my office who tried to sell me essential oils now walked by my cubicle shuffling her deck, saying, “Pick a card, any card.”
